LifeBridge Health Home Sinai Home Sinai Division of Bariatric and Minimally Invasive Surgery Diet and Nutrition Some Tips to Help with Eating and Drinking

  • Have a beverage to sip on with you at all times.  Do not gulp liquids.

  • Stop drinking fluids 20-30 minutes before each meal, and wait 20-30 minutes after each meal/snack before drinking fluids.

  • Do not use a drinking straw; you will drink in more air.

  • Do not drink carbonated drinks (these create a feeling of fullness, increase gas/bloating and can stretch your pouch).

  • Limit alcohol.  You will feel the effects much stronger than before.  The enzyme that breaks the alcohol down in your body is limited since there is a very small portion of your stomach left.  Alcohol affects your liver very quickly after surgery causing serious liver damage, can cause weight gain, and results in poor nutrition since alcohol is very high in calories and low in nutrients.

  • Do not drink fluids and eat at the same time.

  • Chew foods thoroughly and slowly, approximately 30 chews per bite.  Allow 20-30 minutes per meal.

  • Be very cautious with red meats and chew pieces well.

  • Avoid nuts and seeds; they may get stuck and cause a blockage of your stoma.

  • Do not drink Boost, Ensure, or slim-fast supplemental drinks since they are extremely high in sugar content which can lead to dumping.

  • Toasted bread is better than fresh, soft bread; saltine crackers and crispy foods are better choices.

  • Must eat frequently ~ every 3-4 hours.

  • You may have to remind yourself to eat since your appetite will be changing.

  • AVOID:  regular milk shakes.

  • Do not add raw eggs to anything that will not be well cooked.

  • SPLENDA is a good non-chemical sugar substitute.

  • Foods that are moist will, in general, be easier to tolerate than dry or sticky foods.

  • Protein supplements should provide at least 12-15 grams of protein per serving and fit into 6-8 ounces of fluid .  Remember the sugar rule.
