Symposium Overview: Patellofemoral degenerative disease is relatively common and can be debilitating. The operative treatment of isolated patellofemoral chondral degeneration and arthritis is controversial. However, several of the underlying factors that contribute to early onset degenerative patellofemoral pain have been identified. These factors include patellofemoral dysplasia, instability, and malalignment as well as overall limb malalignment. These insights, along with recent advances in cartilage restoration and isolated patellofemoral resurfacing or replacement, offer even more options for surgical treatment in refractory cases.

Case-based panel discussions and cadaveric operative demonstrations shown on live video will allow for audience interaction. During the operative demonstrations, a workshop will be offered for physical therapists. Rehabilitative principles of the degenerative patellofemoral joint will be discussed. The discussion will also include the principles that should be applied after the patient undergoes patellofemoral arthroplasty or total knee replacement. This workshop will review current physical therapy protocols for various stages of patellofemoral degenerative disease with special attention to the management of postoperative loss of motion.

Unfortunately, patellofemoral surgery historically has been fraught with confounding and sometimes iatrogenic outcomes. This symposium provides a comprehensive discussion of the operative techniques, reported outcomes, and complications of currently advocated patellofemoral procedures. The symposium will also convey a pragmatic understanding of how to better advise and surgically treat the patient.

Objectives: Sinai Hospital and LifeBridge Health CME activities are designed to educate and improve patient health care. At the completion of this symposium, the attendees should be able to:

1. Be cognizant of the biomechanic and anatomic interrelationships that cause or promote patellofemoral degenerative disease.

2. Understand the clinical evaluation and selection process required to recommend the appropriate operative treatment for the patient.

3. Understand the indications, limitations, and complications of presently advocated procedures.

4. Be thoroughly familiar with current patellofemoral arthroplasty techniques.

Who Should Attend: This program is designed to educate orthopaedic surgeons, residents, and fellows involved in the operative treatment of patellofemoral degenerative disease and its associated conditions. Other people who should attend include:

  • Orthopaedic surgeons who specialize in reconstructive surgery or sports medicine
  • Orthopaedic surgeons who focus on the treatment of knee conditions
  • Physical therapists
  • Surgical physician assistants
  • Operating room personnel
All medical providers who care for patients with painful degenerative patellae and are frustrated with present treatment outcomes will find useful take-home knowledge in these presentations, demonstrations, and discussions.

Accreditation: LifeBridge Health is accredited by MedChi, the Maryland State Medical Society, to sponsor continuing medical education for physicians.

The application to designate this educational activity for a maximum of 8.75 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits TM is currently pending.
