When hip replacement occurs, the natural joint is partially or entirely replaced with an artificial joint (prosthesis). Most artificial joints are made from high-strength plastic, metal or a combination of the two. The hip joint replacement mirrors the ball-in-socket structure of the natural joint.

Hip replacement surgery is used for several conditions. These may include:

  • severe hip pain that does not respond to other treatments
  • severe arthritis
  • injury or broken hip and
  • degeneration of the bones in the hip.

After surgery, physical therapy is an important part of the recovery process.  As part of the recovery, individuals learn how to use crutches and to perform proper exercises.
