The pain management program at the LifeBridge Health Brain & Spine Institute
addresses both acute and chronic pain. Our team of physical medicine and
rehabilitation specialists focuses on functional restoration and improvement of
the quality of life for our patients.
Our comprehensive outpatient chronic pain program is
designed for those who do not require additional surgery or invasive procedures,
while our inpatient pain program is designed for those who may require
additional treatment.
Our staff physiatrists offer consultation and treatment
for a wide array of conditions for acute and chronic musculoskeletal disorders,
including:
- Back
and neck pain
- Pinched
nerves (such as carpal tunnel syndrome) and nerve pain
- Stroke
- Amputation
- Post-polio
syndrome
- Work-related
injuries
- RSD/CRPS
(reflex sympathetic dystrophy/complex regional pain syndrome)
- Fibromyalgia
and myofascial pain
- Spasticity
and other movement disorders
- Medical
problems of musicians and dancers
- Sports-related
injuries
- Brain
injury
- Spinal
cord injury
- Peripheral
neuropathy
- Chronic
pain
We offer a wide variety of specialized procedures to
treat these conditions, which may include:
- Joint
injections
- Trigger
point injections
- Other
soft tissue injections
- Botulium
toxin injections
- Ultrasound
guided nerve blocks and joint injections
Those with cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine and pelvis
pain may be eligible for spinal injections performed under X-ray (fluoroscopic)
guidance. These may include:
- Epidural
a cortisone injection around the spinal nerves
- Facet
block a cortisone injection into the spine facet joint
- Radio
frequency neurotomy a longer duration nerve block using radio
waves
- Sacroiliac
joint a cortisone injections into this major pelvic
joint
- Hip
joint a cortisone and/or anesthetic injection for diagnosis or
treatment
- Discogram
a diagnostic disc injection used to evaluate disc pain that may not show
on the MRI
- Sympathetic
block administered in the neck or back to relieve nerve pain or
RSD
- Spinal
stimulator trials temporary spinal electrodes used for pain
relief
- Epidural
lysis of adhesions an injection procedure to break up scar tissue in the
spine
Our outpatient chronic pain program is a comprehensive
approach to managing pain long term. It incorporates:
- Medical
management the physiatrist will evaluate and treat pain, depression,
anxiety and sleep problems and coordinate the patients plan.
- Psychological
treatment focuses on specific pain management strategies such as
biofeedback, breathing exercises and imagery, as well as the emotional issues
associated with chronic pain including depression, anxiety, coping skills and
adjustment to disability.
- Physical
therapy utilizes exercise, manual techniques, thermal modalities
including heat and cold, ultrasound, and electrical stimulation to increase
strength, flexibility, balance, endurance and mobility. Emphasis is placed on
body mechanics, posture and gait training to reduce the need for aid devices
for walking. Aquatic therapy is also provided.
- Occupational
therapy works with the individual to restore functional independence in
activities of daily living, including eating, grooming and
driving.
- Driving
evaluation assesses the feasibility of safe driving with or without
adaptive automobile equipment.
- Acupuncture
used as an alternative to medication or injection to aid in
relaxation.
- Percutaneous
neuromodulation therapy (PNT) an electrical stimulation modality used
especially for complex pain syndromes that involve central nervous system
sensitization.
