Description

Sinai Hospital of Baltimore has created a new Department of Neurology and has appointed Adrian J. Goldszmidt, M.D., to serve as chief of the department. Prior to the creation of the new department, Neurology was a division within the Department of Medicine; Goldszmidt served as head of the Division of Neurology and head of the Stroke Center at Sinai.

The elevation of the Division of Neurology to a department is a testament to Sinais commitment to providing patients with the latest therapies and treatments to ensure the best possible outcomes, said Neil Meltzer, president of Sinai Hospital of Baltimore. "In the nearly 10 years Dr. Goldszmidt has been with Sinai Hospital, he has been instrumental in the continued development of the hospitals neuroscience capabilities. His work, particularly within the area of stroke treatment and research, is a valuable asset to the institution and the greater Baltimore community.

The Department of Neurology provides both general and sub-specialty consultations in the neuroscience field. Specialists offer a variety of services and clinics in the areas of headache, stroke, epilepsy, nerve and muscle disorders, ALS, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimers disease, multiple sclerosis, and dizziness.

Additionally, the department will be key factor in the newly established LifeBridge Health Brain & Spine Institute, a one-of-its-kind consortium of specialists from Sinai Hospital and Northwest Hospital Center in neurology, neurosurgery, orthopedics, physical medicine and rehabilitation, and other subspecialties. The Institute offers a full range of services for brain, spine and peripheral nervous system diseases including sophisticated diagnostic techniques, state-of-the-art surgical modalities and comprehensive rehabilitation programs. In 2007, Sinai Hospital will open a new outpatient office building and a new 36-bed, all private-room neurological pavilion, which will house a Spine Center, an Epilepsy Monitoring Unit and a Stroke Center with a 10-bed inpatient Stroke Unit.

As chief of Neurology, Goldszmidt plans to move the department forward by continuing to improve the level of clinical care and research, while increasing awareness for the neurological programs.

Sinai Hospital and LifeBridge Health have opened a unique institution dedicated to treating ailments within the spectrum of neurology, neurosurgery and rehabilitation, said Goldszmidt. Im excited and honored to help lead the Department of Neurology as the hospital embarks on this new endeavor, which will dramatically alter Baltimores medical landscape for those seeking help with neurological disorders.

Sinai Hospital of Baltimore is a member of LifeBridge Health, a regional health organization, which includes Northwest Hospital CenterLevindale Hebrew Geriatric Center and HospitalJewish Convalescent & Nursing Home, and related subsidiaries and affiliates.
