| New patient care unit focuses on family-centered care
Sinai Hospital unveiled the Neuroscience Center, an inpatient unit of the
LifeBridge Health Brain & Spine Institute. The center offers a full range of
services for brain, spine and peripheral nervous system diseases. The 36-bed
all-private-room unit is specifically designed with patients and family members
in mind.
Family-centered care, which encourages family members to become active
participants in the care team, is a new initiative at Sinai Hospital. With this
new patient care model, families are no longer seen as visitors, but rather as
involved members of the medical team. The Neuroscience Center at Sinai is a
patient care unit, combining the hospital�s recognized neurological services in
a family-friendly environment. Each state-of-the-art patient room is equipped
with a family zone, which includes comfortable chairs and a pull-out sofa bed,
in addition to the patient care essentials.
Families are a valued part of all medical care as they are often the
caregivers outside of the hospital,� said Neil Meltzer, president of Sinai
Hospital of Baltimore. Careful thought and planning went into the design of the
patient rooms in the Neuroscience Center. We made sure to include accommodations
for families to stay with patients for an extended period of time.�
In addition to being family friendly, the Neuroscience Center features a
12-bed specialized inpatient Spine Center, an expanded four-bed Epilepsy
Monitoring Unit and a 10-bed Joint Commission certified primary Stroke Center.
The Neuroscience Center at Sinai Hospital incorporates multiple disciplines
including neurology, neurosurgery, orthopedics and rehabilitation to provide
specialized patient care,� commented Neal Naff, M.D., chief of the Department of
Neurosurgery at Sinai Hospital.
Individuals with ailments ranging from back pain and memory disorders to
stroke and movement disorders are now able to recover in rooms specifically
designed to meet their individual needs.
The unit has some of the newest treatments, diagnostic tools and amenities
specifically designed for patients recovering from injuries or illnesses
relating to the brain and spine,� said Adrian J. Goldszmidt, M.D., chief of the
Department of Neurology at Sinai Hospital and director of the Stroke Center at
Sinai.
Each room features the newest technology in patient care equipment
including an ergonomically designed patient lift, which allows nurses to more
easily assist patients recovering from neurological or spinal injuries to and
from the bathroom and shower. In addition, patient call buttons directly dial
nurses through a mobile, hands-free phone. To minimize the risk of falls, beds
are equipped with an alarm that notifies nurses and patient care associates if a
patient is trying to get out of bed unassisted. The unit also features a
satellite rehabilitation gym, allowing patients to conveniently begin their
rehabilitation.
The Neuroscience Center is part of the LifeBridge Health Brain & Spine
Institute, a one-of-its-kind consortium of specialists from Sinai Hospital and
Northwest Hospital Center in neurology, neurosurgery, orthopedics, physical
medicine and rehabilitation, and other subspecialties. The Institute offers a
full range of services for brain, spine and peripheral nervous system diseases
including sophisticated diagnostic techniques, state-of-the-art surgical
modalities and comprehensive rehabilitation programs.
