The Co-Directors of the Program are Drs. Dror Paley and John E. Herzenberg. They are both full-time geographic attending staff at the Rubin Institute for Advanced Orthopedics. Both Co-Directors are Board-certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, Fellows of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada, members of the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America, members of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery, and founding members of the Association for the Study and Application of the Methods of Ilizarov. Both are internationally renowned experts in limb lengthening and reconstruction and frequently lecture in the United States and abroad.
The Co-Directors provide the fellows with regular evaluation and feedback related to their performance, knowledge base, and skills, including the development of professional attitudes consistent with the profession. Fellows are allowed to advance to higher levels of responsibility only on the basis of evidence of their satisfactory progressive scholarship and professional growth. The Co-Directors ensure that the fellows are given reasonable duties and call assignments. The working schedules are designed so that on average, excluding exceptional patient care needs, fellows have at least 1 day of 7 free of routine responsibilities and take call no more than every fourth night. The fellow does not take first call in the hospital, because this is a resident responsibility. The fellow does carry a pager, to be available as needed for consultation. Policies regarding academic discipline, complaints, and grievances are those of the RIAO.
In addition to the two program Co-Directors, Dr. Janet Conway is a faculty member of the International Center for Limb Lengthening. Dr. Conway is a full-time geographic faculty member at the IAO. She is Director of the Bone and Joint Infection Center of the International Center for Limb Lengthening. She is Board-certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and is a graduate of the Fellowship Program.
The Director of the The Wasserman Gait Laboratory at the Rubin Institute for Advanced Orthopaedics is Anil Bhave, PT. He performs clinical gait analysisanalysis and other specialized studies, including nerve testing.
All members of the teaching staff devote sufficient time to meet their supervisory and teaching responsibilities. They demonstrate a strong interest in the education of residents and fellows, sound clinical and teaching abilities, support of the goals of the Program, a commitment to their own continuing medical education, and participation in scholarly activities, including publishing and presenting original research.
Other administrative and support personnel at the International Center for Limb Lengthening are available to provide extensive support to the fellow in clinical, educational, and research endeavors. These personnel include a practice administrator, three full-time nurses (one of whom maintains the clinical database), three secretaries, a receptionist, and a publishing team consisting of a senior editor, medical illustrator, and multimedia specialist. The senior editor provides editorial assistance in the production of research manuscripts and presentation materials. The medical illustrator provides art and graphic services. The multimedia specialist provides photographic assistance, slides, and presentation materials.
