The ability to take care of critically ill patients is one of the
hallmarks of a well trained surgeon. During their PGY II year, each
resident will spend a total of 3 months in the Sinai surgical intensive
care unit as part of a multi-specialty care team. The surgical
residents will participate in all care rendered to the SICU patients at
Sinai Hospital, including admission, diagnostic work-up, procedures,
post-operative care, and discharge.
Daily rounds will provide the residents with the opportunity to present
complex patients, systematically elaborate comprehensive care plans, and
receive one-on-one bedside teaching from one of our surgical intensivists.
During the rotation, the resident will perform ICU-related procedures,
like intubation, central venous cannulation, bronchoscopy, tracheostomy
and percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy. Educational
activities include the weekly surgical core curriculum, a critical care
core curriculum and review of landmark literature, weekly general surgery
M&M and case-based resident lectures, as well as the monthly Grand
Rounds and skills Lab at Hopkins.
After completion of this PGY II rotation the resident will be able to
continue to use his/her learned skills on rotations in burn surgery and
critical care, trauma surgery, etc., and as the senior resident
responsible for the general surgery services at Sinai.
