The Sarcoma / CyberKnife Clinic

Welcome to the Sarcoma Clinic, a multidisciplinary clinic located at the Alvin & Lois Lapidus Cancer Institute at LifeBridge Health.

The Sarcoma Clinic treats patients suffering from primary to metastatic bone and soft tissue tumors. These cancers develop in the bodys connective tissues, which include fat, muscles, blood vessels, deep skin tissues, nerves, bones and cartilage. Surgical oncologist Alan M. Levine, M.D., director of the Alvin & Lois Lapidus Cancer Institute, is joined on the Sarcoma Clinic team by medical oncologist Marvin (Jack) Feldman, M.D., and radiation oncologist Cardella W. Coleman, M.D.

The mission of the Sarcoma Clinic at Sinai Hospital is to provide a multidisciplinary, comprehensive approach to patients with unusual malignancies in an effort to provide better care and to make treatment more convenient for them.

Patients are typically referred from orthopedic oncologists. After an initial biopsy, they are introduced to the Sarcoma Clinic team. Once a patient enters the Sarcoma Clinic, team members review the patients case history and all records and tests. Following surgery, a meeting is held to determine the roles of radiation and chemotherapy in treatment plans.

There are different ways of treating sarcomas and different risks associated with each course. A higher cure rate may mean more complications. A lower cure rate may mean fewer complications. Patients are also informed about clinical research trials in which they may be eligible to participate.

A major component of treatment in the Sarcoma Clinic is extensive follow-up consultations with patients. Initially the team sees patients every three months, then six months, then yearly. The team continues to monitor patients closely for years after their treatment. The follow-up is reassuring for both doctors and the patient. If the cancer is to recur, the professionals at the Sarcoma Clinic are likely to find out early and nip the process in the bud.
