
The surgical residents will rotate for four to six weeks in the
Division of Cardiac Surgery at Sinai Hospital during their intern
year. During that time, the Sinai resident will be an integral member of the
cardiac surgery team, participating in the pre- and post-operative care of
cardiac patients and will experience the specific environment of the open-heart
operating room.
Understanding the principles of cardiac anesthesia, the
physiologic changes associated with cardiopulmonary bypass, the essentials of
CICU care and postoperative rehabilitation are among the essential concepts
the surgery resident will learn during this rotation. In the operating
room, the residents will learn the principles of median sternotomy,
cardiac exposure and the concepts of vein harvest.
The surgical residents
will attend the following educational activities during their
rotation:

In addition, the residents will receive the following lectures during
the subspecialty core curriculum:
- (Patho-)physiology of cardiopulmonary bypass and cardiovascular
cooling
- Coronary artery disease: from epidemiology to state-of-the-art
therapy
- Valvular heart disease: pathophysiology and management
- Aortic aneurysm and dissection: medical, surgical and endovascular
therapy
- Peri-operative care of the cardiac (surgery) patient
- Interventional therapy for heart failure and arrhythmias
