Once a
month the Sinai resident attends the Johns Hopkins Department of Surgery Grand Rounds. This
activity is followed by -two to three hours of hands-on experience in the
state-of-the-art animal operative lab. Junior residents practice procedures like central
venous access, tube thoracostomy, pericardiocenthesis and basic suturing techniques, in -five
to six training modules. Senior residents, under supervision by faculty,
perform operations on (almost) human-sized swine and learn about specific
exposures and pitfalls, in over 12 training modules. "It does feel
different to stand on the other side of the table and make all of the
decisions".
Together with practice on minimally invasive simulators at Sinai and the
A.T.O.M. course, this type of training will provide the resident with
greater skills and confidence for the operating
room. |
