The Division of Endocrinology in the department of medicine at Sinai Hospital provides comprehensive
endocrine consultative services to patients with a wide variety of
endocrinologic and metabolic disorders, including:
- thyroid diseases
- diabetes
- lipid disorders
- osteoporosis and calcium disorders
- hypogonadism in men and women
- androgenic disorders in women
- diseases of the pituitary and adrenal glands
Sinai�s endocrinology staff of five board-certified physicians, a diabetes
nurse educator and a nutritionist, provide state-of-the-art care. Diagnostic and
treatment services include:
- thyroid ultrasound and biopsy
- radioiodine therapy for hyperthyroidism and thyroid
cancer
- bone densitometry (DXA scanning)
- continuous glucose monitoring assessment (CGMS) in
patients with diabetes
- insulin pump therapy
- diabetes education
Physician Referrals
Physicians throughout the region are
encouraged to refer patients to the division for consultation or treatment.
Staff members work in close collaboration with referring physicians to ensure
continuity of the highest level of care.

Division of Endocrinology Staff
David S. Cooper,
M.D. Special Interest In: Thyroid Disease
Dr. Cooper graduated from Tufts University School of Medicine and completed his
residency in internal medicine at Barnes Hospital/Washington University School
of Medicine. He completed his endocrinology fellowship training at the
Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School. He currently directs the
Division of Endocrinology at Sinai Hospital and is Professor of Medicine and
International Health at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and the
Bloomberg Johns Hopkins School of Public Health. He serves as an editor-in-chief
for endocrinology for UpToDate, as a contributing editor of the Journal of the
American Medical Association (JAMA), and as the deputy editor of the Journal of
Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism. He is the president-elect of the American
Thyroid Association. Dr. Cooper is a nationally and internationally recognized
expert in thyroidology, and has been repeatedly listed in The Best Doctors in
America, America�s Top Doctors, and Baltimore Magazine�s listing of top doctors
in the region. |

Henry G. Fein,
M.D. Special Interest In: Diabetes and Lipid Disorders
Dr. Fein earned his medical degree from Columbia University College of
Physicians and Surgeons. He was a house officer in medicine at Bellevue Hospital
and completed his post-graduate medical education in endocrinology at the
National Institutes of Health. Dr. Fein has more than 25 years of experience
treating patients as a staff physician at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in
Washington, D.C., while serving as an associate professor of medicine at the
Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences F. Edward Hebert School of
Medicine in Bethesda. He has conducted extensive research and written numerous
articles on subjects relating to drug research and pituitary/hypothalamic
neuroendocrinology. His research in the areas of obesity, diabetes, pituitary
disorders and thyroid diseases has been published in peer-reviewed journals, and
he has served as an editorial reviewer for Science and the Journal of
Endocrinological Investigation. |
Esther Krug, M.D. Special Interest In: Bone Problems and Women's Health
A
native of Russia, Dr. Krug completed her medical studies at the I.P.
Pavlov Medical Institute in St. Petersburg prior to serving her residency in internal
medicine at St. Francis Medical Center in Pittsburgh. After her fellowship
in endocrinology and metabolism at the University of Pittsburgh Medical
Center, she served as a staff endocrinologist at Allegheny General Hospital in
Pittsburgh, where she had an interest in general endocrinology, diabetes and women�s
health issues. Dr. Krug is an Assistant Professor at Johns Hopkins
School of Medicine and is a member of the Endocrine
Society, the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists and the American
Diabetes Association. Dr. Krug directs the Sinai Hospital Center for Bone
Health and has a special interest in managing osteoporosis and and androgen disorders
in women. |
Sally M.
Pinkstaff, M.D., Ph.D. Special Interest In:
Diabetes
Dr.
Pinkstaff earned her medical degree from the Medical College of
Virginia and was an intern and resident at the University of Chicago hospitals,
where she also completed her endocrinology fellowship. Dr. Pinkstaff also received a Ph.D.
in physiology from Northwestern University and is currently an Assistant
Professor of Medicine at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. She practiced
endocrinology for 15 years in the metropolitan Chicago area, where she served as
director of the endocrinology section and director of the Diabetes Center at
West Suburban Hospital Medical Center in Oak Park, Ill. At West Suburban
Hospital, she helped establish a certified diabetes center and an outpatient
intensive insulin program for patients with Type 1 diabetes. Her work has been
published in The Endocrinologist, the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and
Metabolism. She is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and the
American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists. She is also a member of the
Endocrine Society and the American Diabetes Association. |
