Experience. That’s what counts when it comes to health care. And no other private hospital has as much experience in offering rehabilitation services to its patients than the Rehabilitation Center at Sinai Hospital.
In 1965, Sinai became the first private hospital in Maryland to offer rehabilitation services to its patients with the opening of the Department of Rehabilitation and Physical Medicine, under the direction of B. Stanley Cohen, M.D.
Today, nearly 40 years since its inception, the B. Stanley Cohen Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Sinai Hospital is a leader in its field offering numerous inpatient, outpatient and specialty services.
Scott E. Brown, M.D., the director of the department, which includes the Sinai Rehabilitation Center, says almost four decades of service have taught his staff to throw away the “cookbooks and protocols for treatment.” Instead, each patient is given an individually-designed treatment plan to help achieve the rehabilitation goals set by a specialized team of doctors, nurses and therapists.
Inpatient Unit
Sinai’s comprehensive inpatient rehabilitation unit serves patients disabled as a result of cardiac disease, cancer, neurologic disorders, trauma, amputation, organ transplantation and orthopedic conditions. Patients benefit from the hospital-based unit with a wide range of services monitored by specially trained staff, led by a physiatrist (a physician specializing in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation).
The 36-bed unit includes treatment areas for physical, occupational and speech therapy and a model apartment in which patients practice daily living activities. And, being based within the hospital, patients can benefit from the 24-hour availability of the specially trained medical staff and resources of an acute care hospital.
Brain Injury Unit
Taking advantage of the best of both inpatient and outpatient services, the Sinai Rehabilitation Center, in conjunction with Levindale, offers a comprehensive brain injury rehabilitation program. The RECOVER! Coma Emergence Program, based at Levindale, helps patients recover from the low-arousal/unresponsive state typically associated with a coma.
The RESTORE! Program, at the Sinai Rehabilitation Center, offers an intensive physical and cognitive program designed by clinical experts in the closely monitored setting of the specially designed Brain Injury Unit. The RETURN! Brain Injury Com- munity Re-entry Program at Sinai, an outpatient therapy program, offers a structured, consistent weekly schedule of group and individual activities designed to improve memory, organization, initiation and other thinking skills that may be impaired by brain injury.
Outpatient Programs
For those not needing round-the-clock hospital care, intensive outpatient programs are available at the Sinai Rehabilitation Center. These programs offer the same individually designed treatment plans as the inpatient unit without the overnight stay.
Pain Management. Millions of people struggle to manage pain on a daily basis. Sinai’s Pain Management Program, within the Department of Physicial Medicine and Rehabilitation, has specially trained physicians in both Physiatry and Pain Medicine who offer patients an in-depth and thorough evaluation. Treatments can include injections, medications, aquatic therapy, pain psychology and alternative methods like acupuncture.
Diagnostic Ultrasound Technology. Recent advances in ultrasound technology now allow physiatrists at Sinai to do something they could never do before: view images of musculoskeletal tissue in motion in real time. And Sinai’s physiatrists are using this new technology to help patients with tendon or bursa injuries, rotator cuff injuries, pinched nerves, muscle tears or tendonitis. Sinai’s Rehabilitation Center recently acquired a B-K Medical ultrasound scanner, which will be used to diagnose and treat numerous neuromuscular, musculoskeletal and pain conditions.
Specialty Services. Using Botox® has become a common practice within the cosmetic surgery field, but botulinum toxin and phenol chemodenervation are also used at the Sinai Rehabilitation Center to treat spasticity after a patient suffers a stroke, head injury, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy or spinal cord injury, and certain pain conditions.
The Center also boasts a number of other specialty services including stroke rehabilitation, driver evaluation and training, amputee rehabilitation, swallowing evaluation and electrodiagnostic testing (nerve studies).
