The staff treats medical conditions affecting the fingers, hand and wrist, with the primary objective to restore or preserve function for daily living. Specialized teams of physicians and therapists work to achieve the best outcome possible. A multidisciplinary team includes orthopedic and plastic surgeons who combine their medical expertise to treat both bone and soft tissue problems. Occupational therapists deliver rehabilitative services, and a registered nurse provides patient education and coordinates patient services. In addition, staff consultants who provide related hand therapy services complement the Hand Center team.
All conditions that affect the structure and function of the hand, wrist and upper extremity are treated at the Northwest Hospital Hand Center. These include repetitive motion conditions, traumatic injuries, and complex hand problems resulting from disease.
Advanced diagnostic procedures, which are performed at the Northwest Hospital Outpatient Center, ensure early, comprehensive care. Diagnostic imaging using X-ray, MRI or angiography, for example, allows radiologists and the hand surgeon to view images quickly and to begin treatment as soon as possible.
Treatments available include hand function assessment, custom splinting, therapeutic exercises, oral medications, steroid injections, reconstructive surgery, minimally invasive surgery for carpal tunnel syndrome, post-operative care and patient education.
For emergencies, a hand surgeon is always on call to respond to traumatic injuries. Through immediate medical intervention, expert surgeons work to prevent further injury and safeguard against serious lifelong effects.
