One in six will suffer some form of mental illness during his or her lifetime.

Studies say that psychiatric problems can affect men and women at any stage in their lives. In fact, one in six will suffer some form of mental illness during his or her lifetime.

To better meet the mental health needs of northwest Baltimore County and the surrounding areas, Northwest Hospital Center has expanded its psychiatric services by increasing inpatient bed capacity. Complemented by psychiatric consultation services, the 14-bed inpatient unit provides comprehensive psychiatric care in a comfortable and attractive setting. Referrals to the Inpatient Unit may be made directly, or through Northwest ER-7.

Inpatient Unit

The Inpatient Unit treats adults over the age of 18, who, because they have emotional and behavioral difficulties, can no longer live or function safely at home or in their usual routine. Psychiatric illnesses can be serious—as serious as heart disease or cancer—and therefore, should be treated with the same level of concern. Effective treatment allows individuals to manage their symptoms and return to a more productive level of functioning.

The Inpatient Unit provides 24-hour skilled psychiatric nursing care and interventions, daily assessment and treatment oversight by a psychiatrist, and a coordinated, goal-driven plan of care delivered by a multidisciplinary team of mental health professionals. Rapid stabilization of psychiatric symptoms is the goal, so that patients can move on to less restrictive, outpatient treatment settings for continued care.

Patients being cared for on one of Northwest’s Medical/Surgical Units may be seen for psychiatric consultation at the request of their attending physician. A consultant will identify psychiatric conditions and make recommendations for treatment both during the time the patient remains hospitalized on the Med/Surg unit and following discharge. In some cases, this may result in the patient being transferred to the Inpatient Psychiatric Unit following conclusion of his or her medical stay.

Recommendations for outpatient psychiatric follow-up may also be made.
