Looking at the face of a loved one or viewing the beauty of nature reminds us of the valuable gift of sight. Sinai Hospital’s Krieger Eye Institute provides a full range of ophthalmic consultative services.

Leaders in Treating the Diseases of the Eye

The physicians and highly trained staff at the Krieger Eye Institute (KEI) provide the latest methods of surgical and non-surgical medical treatment of diseases of the eye, including glaucoma, strabismus, ocular tumors, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, retinal detachment and cataracts. KEI specialists also offer oculoplastic surgery, orbital surgery, neuro-ophthalmology, pediatric ophthalmology and laser treatment to correct nearsightedness (LASIK and PRK).

Prevention and Preservation

KEI ophthalmologists stress the importance of regular and early vision screenings for both children and adults. Many vision problems progress almost without symptoms. Even conditions as serious as glaucoma or a detached retina can steal vision with barely a clue.

Painless symptoms such as blurred vision that doesn’t clear up when you blink, the appearance of “floaters,” showers of light or the perception that a “shade” is being drawn over your eyes should not be ignored. See your ophthalmologist immediately.

Vision screenings can begin very early. Premature infants, for example, who have had supplemental oxygen are at risk to develop retinopathy of prematurity—or an abnormal development of the blood vessels that supply the retina—which can result in blindness.

People with medical problems such as diabetes, hypertension and hyperthyroidism, or a family history of retinitis pigmentosa, glaucoma, near-sightedness or other eye disease should also have vision screenings. All children should have their vision checked prior to starting school and then every three to five years after that.

See Better, Look Better

While KEI ophthalmologists are at the forefront of ocular disease research, they can also offer cosmetic services through the Aesthetic and Eyelid Surgery program. For example, eyelid surgery (or blepharoplasty) is designed to improve drooping upper lids, “bags” or sagging below the eyes, and puffy skin around the eyes. This procedure is often performed together with other cosmetic procedures including facelifts, forehead lifts, cheek lifts and Botox® injections.

Recently the Krieger Eye Institute acquired a Sciton Profile® laser so physicians could extend laser-aided aesthetic services to the rest of the face and body. Using up to four different laser lights, the Sciton is able to resurface skin damaged by acne; reduce the appearance of rosacea, fine lines and wrinkles; and eliminate unwanted hair or “spider” veins.
