Statistics show that more people between the ages of 1 and 44 years old are killed each year in the United States by trauma-related injuries than any other illness or disease. Trauma is defined as any injury, wound or shock that could cause the loss of a limb or threaten life. Half of all trauma-related injuries result from automobile crashes.
Thankfully for the Baltimore area, Sinai Hospital’s Trauma Center stands ready with a specially trained trauma team to provide life- and limb-saving care. The Trauma Center is one of only four trauma centers in Baltimore, and one of nine in the state.
Sinai’s trauma patients receive care in many areas of the hospital including the operating room, radiology, rehabilitation, the ICU and pediatric ICU. Most trauma patients arrive via Sinai ER-7, where the Trauma Center has its own separate facilities to receive patients from ground transportation or helicopters landing on the rooftop helipad. Sinai ER-7 is fully equipped for rapid resuscitation, diagnosis and definitive care.
Sinai’s Trauma Center earned its Level II status by caring for many trauma patients day in and day out, year after year. Being verified as a Level II trauma center means Sinai is able to provide an exceptional level of care to patients in need of critical care. Immediate, round-the-clock coverage by trauma surgeons and specialists, including doctors skilled in orthopedic surgery, neurosurgery, anesthesiology, emergency medicine, radiology and critical care is always available. In addition, its facilities include comprehensive imaging technology, including CT scanning, for faster diagnosis.
The entire hospital staff provides ongoing support and medical care backup for patients who must be admitted after initial treatment.
Sinai is both a community hospital and a teaching hospital, committed to promoting trauma prevention and education to trauma team members and the residents who train here. That commitment also extends to the surrounding communities.
The Division of Trauma at Sinai, in conjunction with LifeBridge Health community health educators, teaches children how to avoid trauma injuries with the “Traumaroo” safety program. “Watch Your Step,” an injury safety program for adults, is also taught to area seniors and older adults.
The Trauma Center at Sinai is dedicated to the continued improvement in trauma care through a comprehensive performance improvement program. The Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems found no deficiencies with the Trauma Center at Sinai during its 2003 recertification process.
