Description

The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) has awarded the Stroke Center at Sinai Hospitalwith a Primary Stroke Center Certification, recognizing the center for its exceptional efforts in fostering better outcomes in stroke care. Sinai Hospital of Baltimore is the only community hospital in the area to earn such a designation.

Earning certification by the Joint Commission is an assurance to our patients that Sinai is using the latest and best therapies and treatments to ensure the best possible outcomes, saidAdrian Goldszmidt, M.D., head of the Stroke Center at Sinai and head of the Division of Neurology.

The Joint Commission's certificate of distinction for Primary Stroke Centers requires certified centers to comply with the national standards and performance measurement expectations, signifying that those centers provide the critical elements to achieve long-term success in improving outcomes.

The services provided at the Stroke Center at Sinai Hospital help decrease complications from the disease while increasing the efficiency of necessary care. The Stroke Centers streamlined system allows patients to receive proper and prompt care; it includes a multidisciplinary approach from emergency medicine, neurology, neurosurgery and interventional radiology, rehabilitation services, pharmacy and social work.

In addition, the Stroke Center works hand-in-hand with the hospitalsRehabilitation Center, which has developed and implemented a Stroke and Neurology Support Group that provides comprehensive rehabilitation to patients and support for their families.

The dedicated staff at the Stroke Center follow patients throughout their entire stay, from admission and treatment to discharge and rehabilitation, said Goldszmidt. The Stroke Center is able to utilize all of the resources offered at Sinai and deliver comprehensive care to patients and their families on one campus.

The Primary Stroke Center Certification awarded by the Joint Commission is based on guidelines issued by the Brain Attack Coalition and American Stroke Association, which have made recommendations on best practices to achieve consistently good patient outcomes.

The Joint Commission is an independent not-for-profit organization and the nation's oldest and largest standards-setting and accrediting body in health care. It evaluates and accredits more than 15,000 healthcare organizations and programs in the United States, including more than 7,800 hospitals and home-care organizations.

The Stroke Center at Sinai Hospital is a program of the new Brain and Spine Institute of LifeBridge Health, a center of excellence for neurological and neurosurgical care.

Sinai Hospital of Baltimore is a member ofLifeBridge Health, a regional health care organization, which includesNorthwest Hospital Center,Levindale Hebrew Geriatric Center and Hospital,Jewish Convalescent & Nursing Home, and related subsidiaries and affiliates.
