What About Sinai's Programs?

Sinai offers an ASHP-accredited residency program in General Pharmacy Practice. Required rotations include internal medicine, critical care, pediatrics, infectious diseases, drug information, ambulatory care and a dedicated research month. Electives include oncology, neonatal intensive care unit, pediatric intensive care unit, surgical intensive care unit, drug information/adverse drug event reporting, cardiac care unit and pharmacy practice management. Residents are evaluated using ASHP's Residency Learning System (RLS). Several opportunities exist to develop teaching skills through collaboration with the University of Maryland School
of Pharmacy.

Mission of Pharmacy Practice Residency

Practitioners completing this residency will gain the necessary experience and critical thinking skills applicable to numerous care venues. Their professional development will be facilitated through a process of self-monitoring, knowledge acquisition and application of technical and analytical skills. This, in combination with the development of interpersonal skills, will result in a unique leadership style applicable toward improving the safety of the medication use process.

Residency Goals

  1. Gain experience and critical thinking skills in providing direct patient care across a broad range of care settings
  2. Develop skills in self-evaluation including establishing personal goals and assessment
  3. Develop skills in teamwork as a leader and follower
  4. Develop marketable job skills
  5. Develop technical and analytical skills in managing patient safety
  6. Develop skills in education of others and effecting knowledge transfer
  7. Develop essential interpersonal skills to facilitate the development of human relationships

Residency Opportunities

Residents will be encouraged to develop teaching skills via the following venues:

  1. Inservices to pharmacy staff
  2. Inservices to medical/nursing staff
  3. Involvement with precepting of University of Maryland School of Pharmacy students
  4. Opportunities to teach various classes at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy

Additional Experiences

  • Major research project with a formal presentation at the Eastern States Conference
  • Pharmacotherapy Rounds presentation given at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy
  • Medication Safety Project

Travel

Residents will travel to ASHP's midyear clinical meeting in December. Travel support will be provided for this trip. Also, expenses will be covered for the Eastern States Conference.

Licensure

Residents are required to become a registered
pharmacist in the state of Maryland by September 1.

Staffing

Resident rotates every third weekend and holidays.
May elect one to two evenings per week at a per diem rate. (Not greater than 8 hours per week).

Vacation

Residents are given two weeks vacation along with the standard paid time off days according to Sinai's Human Resources policy.
