DESCRIPTION AND GOALS OF COURSE:

This rotation allows the student to participate in the evaluation and treatment of children with complaints such as unexplained abdominal pain, persistent vomiting or diarrhea, difficulties with defecation, failure to thrive, unexplained intestinal bleeding, and unexplained jaundice. Diagnoses frequently encountered include inflammatory bowel disease, peptic ulcer disease, gastrointestinal motility and malabsorptive disorders and hepatobiliary disease. The student will be able to observe procedures including diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy, liver biopsy, motility studies, and breath hydrogen testing. The student will also become familiar with nutritional assessment and support services such as enteral and parenteral therapy.
