- High school diploma or equivalent is required
Under limited supervision, uses coding conventions and guidelines (as set forth in Coding Clinics, CPT Assistant, AHIMA Publications) and approved hospital policies to assign diagnostic and procedural codes to inpatient, day surgery, emergency, and outpatient records. Enters codes and associated abstract information on-line. Works with other staff members to obtain missing chart information; assists other hospital departments and staff members with problems and questions concerning codes, diagnoses, procedures, etc.
Requirements: High School diploma or equivalent. Two (2) years in an acute care hospital setting. RHIA, RHIT and/or CCS required. Certified as an RHIT, RHIA, or CCS by the American Health Information Management Association. Knowledge of medical terminology obtained through formal training or previous experience, and ability to demonstrate its use. Able to demonstrate a proficient knowledge of ICD-9-CM and CPT coding, coding conventions, DRG's and DRG theory, APR and APR theory, CPT. Possesses average or above keyboarding skills in a Windows 98/00 environment. Ability to read and write the English language and adequately demonstrate it use. Demonstrate analytical ability in order to solve problems of moderate complexity. Ability to promote harmony and demonstrate acceptable interpersonal skills.
