For Immediate Release

Description

Paul A. Gurbel, M.D. will become the Helen Dalsheimer Director of the Division of Cardiology at Sinai Hospital of Baltimore. Prior to his appointment, Gurbel served as director of the Sinai Center for Thrombosis Research, where he established one of the nations premier research programs in thrombosis and platelet function. His new appointment takes effect September 1.

For more than 20 years, Dr. Gurbul has combined a busy clinical practice with a successful academic research program. His research has earned him international accolades, specifically for his work studying the basic principles and functions of human blood.

"Sinai has a long tradition of excellence in both clinical care and research. said Dr. Steven Gambert, Physician-in-Chief, Sinai Hospital of Baltimore. "Dr. Gurbel has the unique ability of being able to combine a productive and cutting edge research program with a major and successful clinical practice in interventional cardiology, essentially bridging the research bench to the patient bedside. This approach is key if we are to continue to be a leader in heart care throughout the region."

As chief of cardiology, Gurbel plans to move the department forward by continuing to improve the level of research and clinical care, while increasing the awareness for the cardiology programs.

Sinai Hospital is a unique institution. We are a community hospital doing world class research, said Gurbel. The Sinai Heart Center and the Sinai Center for Thrombosis Research are both currently doing work, which is effecting how physicians, all over the world, treat heart disease. Additionally, as a lifelong member of the greater Baltimore community, I hope to continue to increase the awareness, both locally and nationally, of the life-saving treatments and research being conducted in Marylands backyard.

Presently, Gurbel is also an associate professor of Medicine in the Division of Cardiology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

Gurbel received his undergraduate degree from John Hopkins University and completed his medical degree from the University of Maryland School of Medicine. His residency in Internal Medicine was accomplished at Duke University Medical Center, where he also served as chief resident in medicine and a fellow in cardiology and interventional cardiology. Gurbel also received training as a Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Fellow at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Prior to joining the medical staff at Sinai Hospital, Gurbel served as director of Interventional Cardiology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine.

In July, U.S. News & World Report recognized Sinai as one of the nations top heart hospitals. Additionally, Sinai Hospital of Baltimore was awarded Premier Awards for Quality in the areas of Heart Failure and Coronary Artery Bypass Graft earlier this year.

Sinai Hospital of Baltimore is part of LifeBridge Health, a regional health organization that also includes Northwest Hospital Center, Levindale Hebrew Geriatric Centerand Hospital, Jewish Convalescent & Nursing Home and related subsidiaries and affiliates.
