Northwest Hospital Construction
Update
Northwest Hospital is experiencing Renaissance, that includes renovation and/or additions to nearly every area within the hospital.
The $100 million project is being funded by the hospital's parent, LifeBridge Health and a $5 million capital campaign called The Renaissance Campaign.
Here are highlights of some of these projects.
Vertical Tower Expansion
The second floor of the tower expansion was recently opened and includes a 16-bed state-of-the-art Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and a Respiratory Therapy Unit. The new ICU provides spacious patient rooms to better accommodate leading-edge equipment, medical care staff and visitors.
The tower also includes the addition of a third and fourth floor, consisting of 16,422 square feet on each floor.
When completed, the third floor will include 12,136 square feet of space that will house both a Hospice Unit to provide end-of -life care, and a Sleep Laboratory. The remaining 3,323 square feet will be used for outpatient purposes. The Hospice Unit is scheduled to open in February 2008.
Physical Therapy will also be located on the third floor, making it more accessible to patients.
The fourth floor will house a series of private offices.

Inpatient Renovations
The inpatient tower includes 240 private rooms. Northwest Hospital's long term plans include renovation of all inpatient rooms.
Level 3C is the latest inpatient area to undergo enhancements. New flooring, furniture and exterior finishes will make this 20-bed level on par with other units that have received upgrades.
The newly renovated unit, combined with unit 3D, is now known as the Surgical /Oncology department.

The third floor lobby is also undergoing a cosmetic transformation with a renovated information desk area, corridor and elevator lobbies.
Parking
New parking will become available for employees beginning in October 2007. Approximately 300 spaces will be produced in a new employee lot adjacent to the hospital on Carlson Lane. Phase II of the project calls for the existing employee and physician lot to be reconfigured and repaved, which will allow the creation of approximately 30 additional spots to the rear of the hospital. This improvement will support the hospital's growing campus.
Ultrasound
Northwest Hospitals Ultrasound Suite is being relocated to the vacated CT Suite on the first level of the hospital. This area will include an additional 2,686 square feet that will house an expanded patient waiting area, three ultrasound rooms, support areas, corridor upgrades, and restrooms. The new ultrasound area is expected to be completed in October of 2007.
HBOT/Wound Care Renovation and Expansion
Over a decade
ago, the hospital started one of Baltimores first fully dedicated wound care
programs. Patients who have open wounds that are difficult to heal and
have the potential for infection and unnecessary pain are treated in the
center. The latest therapy in the treatment of these wounds is Hyperbaric
Oxygen Therapy (HBOT). Certified technicians and physicians deliver the
high concentration of oxygen to patients in a private glass enclosed
chamber. Patient outcomes from HBOT treatment are superior, often healing
wounds that might result in amputation or ongoing risk to patient survival.
This program has grown tremendously. Relocation and expansion of the
existing Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) Suite and renovation of the existing
Wound Care area, consisting of approximately 2,938 square feet of space are
underway. This project is expected to be completed in January 2008.
Pharmacy
Renovation of the existing 2,667 square-foot
in-patient pharmacy area will include new equipment, relocation of the existing
pneumatic tube station, and renovation of employee work stations and support
areas. The area is scheduled for completion by the end of December
2007.
Outpatient Registration
Scheduled to be completed by the
end of February 2008, work is ongoing and includes demolition and renovations
that will result in six outpatient registration stations, a waiting area to seat
65 patients/family members, a greeters desk, and a registration workroom.
Additionally, a phlebotomy room, three financial counselors offices,
administrative offices, patient/visitor restrooms, and staff lounge and
restrooms are also included in the plan. Once completed the renovated area
will include over 7,100 square feet of space.
Cardiology Suite
To be ready for patients by summer,
2008, the 3,823 square-foot building addition will be constructed on the north
side of the hospital, between the existing Infusion and Radiology Suites.
Lab
Available for business February 2008, demolition and
renovation will be occurring to house a new laboratory and associated
administrative space totaling approximately 4,880 square feet.
Infusion and
Cancer Therapy
In 2004, the hospital initiated an Infusion and Cancer Therapy
program for patients. The demand for these services exceeded projections
not long after the program began. In 2006, the hospital moved the services
to a new, larger space located near the Outpatient Center and closer to other
support services.
The Herman and Walter Samuelson Breast Care Center
Known
for its compassionate care and multidisciplinary approach, the Herman and Walter
Samuelson Breast Care Center is a crown jewel of the hospital. Patients
rave about the care they receive in the center and rate it among the highest in
customer service. The Center recently celebrated 20 years of operation in
2007.
Located in the Administrative Services Building, the oldest building on
campus and accessed through the rear of the facility, plans call for the
Samuelson Breast Care Center to be relocated to the front of the hospital, near
the main lobby. The new location will be make it easier for patients who
are undergoing invasive procedures to be transferred to adjacent surgical
services areas rather than to cross through public areas, as the current
location requires.
The Samuelson Breast Care Center recently became the first in the area to
offer its patients digital mammography, the most advanced technology available
to detect breast cancer.
Surgical Services
Outpatient operating rooms will be
moved adjacent to the main operating rooms. The space will be enlarged to
include more privacy for waiting and recovery areas. The space will be
expanded to care for the increased demand on surgical resources and the type of
healing environment our patients and their families deserve.
