Doctors and nurses at Levindale are now using or are in the process of educating staff about a variety of techniques; some are traditional and some are complimentary to the tried-and-true methods. Our mission is to maximize the quality of life and to minimize the pain and discomfort, says Pat Palmere-Nason, Director of Nursing and chairwoman of the Pain and Palliative Committee. Every new patient is assessed for pain when he or she arrives at Levindale, and they are given a letter explaining the pain management program.
Once admitted, several techniques are used to help patients cope. Re-positioning them at least every two hours, often in special beds, is of major importance. Levindale is about to begin using Taps to make sure that happens. The nursing staff also uses splints, massage, and takes the time to explain exactly what is about to be done. But thats only part of the story. Other innovations in the beginning stages are aromatherapy, guided imagery, colors that affect moods, and music therapy. Levindales licensed practical nurses and clinical nursing assistants are also very instrumental in preventing added problems. They regularly check patients for skin changes and stiffness in their limbs and immediately report any variations.
The physical needs are only half of the pain problem. Many times emotional discomfort makes the pain seem even worse. Levindale became the first registered Eden Alternative facility in Maryland in 2000. The Eden Alternative philosophy fights loneliness, helplessness, and boredom with companionship, empowerment, and variety, which includes having gardening activities, live-in pets and childrens visits.
In addition to the Pain and Palliative Committee, pain management is also taught at employee orientations. There are also monthly assessments, courses, resource manuals and for the second year, Levindale is holding a pain management skills lab thats open to all staff, from nursing to housekeeping to dietary.
The University of Maryland School of Medicine has just completed an instructional video to teach geriatric nursing assistants across the country how to help their patients manage pain. That video uses Levindale as a model, and it was made here.
