For Immediate Release

Description

Peter Geis, M.D., known for his groundbreaking work in minimally invasive surgery advancements, has joined Northwest Hospital Center as chief of Minimally Invasive Laparoscopic Surgery and the director of the Laparoscopic Fellowship Program. Geis is one of the leading laparoscopic surgeons in the country, having conducted extensive research and written numerous articles on minimally invasive surgical techniques.

This fellowship program is the first of its kind at Northwest Hospital, and we are thrilled to have Dr. Geis at the helm, said Erik Wexler, president and COO, Northwest Hospital Center. Dr. Geis and his team will be leading Northwest into the future of minimally invasive surgery and its advancements.

The program also enables experienced surgeons, unfamiliar with laparoscopic techniques, to work side-by-side with Geis to gain exposure and experience in the field of minimally invasive surgery.

Patients shouldnt have to leave their community in order to get this type of surgical procedure, said Geis. In the past, patients had to travel to larger hospitals where the surgeons were familiar with the technique. That is no longer the case at Northwest Hospital.

Recovery proves to be easier and the hospital stay is often shorter for those who undergo minimally invasive surgery. Many patients with chronic medical conditions and the elderly also benefit by decreasing their risk of developing complications after surgery.

Before joining Northwest Hospital, Geis served as a clinical professor in the Department of Surgery at the Robert Wood Johnson School of Medicine in New Brunswick, N.J. He also worked for St. Joseph Medical Center in Baltimore as the director of the Minimally Invasive Training Institute where he trained approximately 1,000 surgeons per year during a span of seven years in the 1990s. Before that, he was clinical professor of Surgery at the University of Chicago for more than six years.

Geis is a graduate of Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine in Maywood, Ill. He interned in the Department of Surgery at the University of Chicago Hospitals and Clinics, and was a post-doctoral research fellow in Physiology and a resident in Surgery at Loyola University Medical Center.

Certified by the American Board of Surgery, Geis is also member of the United States Founders of Laparoscopic Surgery Society, the International Society for Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery and the American Society for General Surgeons. He also served as president of the Society for Laparo-Endoscopic Surgery.

Northwest Hospital Center is part of LifeBridge Health, a regional health care organization that includes Sinai Hospital of Baltimore, Levindale Hebrew Geriatric Center and Hospital, Jewish Convalescent & Nursing Home, and related subsidiaries and affiliates.
