| Millions of high school and other non-professional athletes are injured every year as a result of some type of sports-related activity. Keeping those teenagers and weekend warriors healthy and active is the goal of LifeBridge Healths newest program, LifeBridge Health Sports Medicine. The program specializes in the diagnosis,
treatment, rehabilitation and prevention of athletic injuries and the enhancement of athletic performance. It is based at state-of-the-art LifeBridge Health & Fitness in Pikesville.
LifeBridge Health Sports Medicine is under the medical direction of Samuel
Matz, M.D., who also serves as the head team physician at McDaniel and Mount St. Marys Colleges. The other members of the programs team include Kenneth Tepper, M.D., Jon Koman, M.D., and Robert Riederman, M.D. Tepper serves as head team physician for Villa Julie College and a consultant to U.S. Boxing, serving as ringside physician for the U.S. Amateur Boxing Association. He also serves as assistant team physician at McDaniel and Mount St. Marys Colleges. Koman and Riederman both serve as team physicians to several local high schools. All four physicians are sports
medicine fellowship trained orthopedic surgeons.
Our physicians are experts in sports medicine and promote lifelong fitness,
says Dr. Matz. We believe that participation in sports, recreational games and activities should lead to better health and greater physical fitness.
Coordinating the daily operation of the Sports Medicine program is certified
athletic trainer Sharon Price, M.Ed. Price most recently served as assistant athletic trainer at Dartmouth College where she provided sports medicine coverage to the field hockey, womens lacrosse and alpine skiing teams, among others.
The program is also teaming up with Physiotherapy Associates, a full-service
physical therapy program located inside LifeBridge Health & Fitness specializing in
manual therapy and sports medicine.
If an athlete needs a medical procedure, such as surgery, the Sports Medicine team uses the cutting-edge treatment facilities and diagnostic tools of Sinai Hospital and Northwest Hospital Center.
The LifeBridge Health Sports Medicine program hopes to help cut down on the number of injuries suffered by athletes at all levels of competition by providing the community with patient education and outreach programs. Those programs include a sports medicine educational lecture series, and free sports injury screenings held
throughout the year.
