The
obstetric service at Sinai is a regionally recognized high-risk
maternity program with 2,600 deliveries annually. The BirthPlace at Sinai,
housed in the new Blaustein Women's and Children's Building, has seven well-appointed
labor-delivery-recovery suites and two operating rooms to perform Cesarean
sections and other surgical interventions. There is a Special Care Unit for
intensive monitoring of high-risk patients. Sinai's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
(NICU) is one of only seven regional referral centers in Maryland. Sinai has
been part of the Maryland Regional Neonatal Transport Program since its inception
in the 1970s, and the NICU has the equipment and staff to help the most
critically ill newborns survive and thrive. With faculty physicians and surgeons
representing most pediatric subspecialties, Sinai can offer immediate care
regardless of the newborn's condition. Full-time staff anesthesiologists are
available at all times to provide care to our patients. All obstetric patients
are available for resident education. There are over 900 high-risk obstetric
admissions annually, yet the prenatal mortality rate is below the national
average. Vaginal births after Cesarean section almost equal the number of
repeat Cesarean sections now, and the overall Cesarean section rate is approximately
28 percent.
