Description

Donald Abrams, M.D., has been named ophthalmologist-in-chief, Zanvyl Krieger chairman of Ophthalmology, for Sinai Hospital of Baltimore, Department of Ophthalmology, based in the Krieger Eye Institute. Before his promotion, Abrams was the director of Glaucoma Services at the Krieger Eye Institute from 1989 to 2005.

Dr. Abrams has 20 years of experience as an ophthalmologist, including the last 16 served as the director of Glaucoma Services for the Krieger Eye Institute, said Neil Meltzer, president and COO, Sinai Hospital of Baltimore. In addition, as local program director for Sinai Hospitals residency program in ophthalmology, he has demonstrated that he is ready to lead the Institute, and we look forward to his continued work with us.

As chief of Ophthalmology, Abrams plans to move the department forward by expanding opportunities for the Institute. I hope to expand the Krieger Eye Institute's coverage area by looking into opportunities for growth at Northwest Hospital Center and other areas in Pikesville, Mount Washington and Owings Mills, Maryland. Additionally, I hope to increase our services at Sinai Hospital of Baltimore with additional faculty in the coming years.

Abrams is also the chairman of Graduate Medical Education for Sinai Hospital of Baltimore and an assistant professor of Ophthalmology for Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. As chief of Ophthalmology, he will continue his role with both programs.

Abrams received his undergraduate degree from Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pa., and completed his medical degree from the Medical College of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, Pa. His residency in ophthalmology was accomplished at Sinai Hospital of Baltimore. Abrams also completed a fellowship in Glaucoma at the Doheny Eye Institute at the University of Southern California School of Medicine, Los Angeles, Ca.

Abrams is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, and is a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
