The Pediatric Ophthalmology Service at the Krieger Eye Institute, led by Dr. Michael Altman, specializes in eye health and services for children, from newborns to 16-year-olds.

What are the most common problems in Pediatric Ophthalmology?

Our group provides a wide range of ophthalmic services -- from treating diseases of the eye and neurological problems, to prescribing glasses for children.

Here is a brief sampling of the types of diseases that we treat:

  • Mis-aligned eyes (Strabismus)
  • Crossing eyes
  • Drifting eyes
  • Double vision
  • Lazy eye
  • Amblyopia
  • Delayed visual developement
  • Abnormal head posture
  • Nystagmus (jiggling eyes)
  • Tearing in the infany
  • Retinopathy of Prematurity

Common Conditions We Treat

Amblyopia

Amblyopia, sometimes called 'lazy eye,' is poor vision in one or both eyes that occurs when normal sight does not develop in the critical early childhood years. It is a common, preventable condition occurring in 3 out of every 100 children. It can be caused when one eye is out of focus, when there is an as of yet undiscovered need for glasses, when eyes are misaligned, or for a variety of other reasons.

Strabismus

Children with this condition have eyes that are misaligned, 'crossed' or drifting. Strabismus affects depth perception and peripheral vision. Strabismus is a major cause of Amblyopia.

Cataracts

Cataracts are a clouding of the eye's normally clear lens. Depending on the severity of the problem, treatment may vary from glasses and contact lenses, to surgery.

Ptosis

Ptosis is a drooping of the upper eyelid. In some cases, the droopy lid can act as an occluder thereby preventing healthy development of vision. The ophthalmologist must carefully consider whether and when surgery is required.
