DESCRIPTION AND
GOALS OF COURSE:
|
This elective offers the student a more concentrated experience in the evaluation and management of disabling orthopedic and musculoskeletal disorders and injuries. The rotation will include evaluation in the acute period after onset of injury both in the outpatient and inpatient setting, management of more severe disability in a comprehensive inpatient rehabilitation unit, and follow up in the outpatient setting. The most common disorders encountered include fractures, joint replacements, arthritis, back and neck pain, and regional musculoskeletal disorders such as nerve entrapments, tendinopathies and myofascial pain syndrome. Special populations include sports injuries, work related injury, and the medical problems of musicians and dancers (performing arts medicine ).
The student will work closely with faculty attending physicians and
residents in medical and functional evaluation of patients including gait
analysis, biomechanics, manual muscle testing, and pain management.
Detailed physical examination and appropriate radiologic evaluation are
stressed. The participant will also learn the details of physical
therapy prescription including thermal ( superficial and deep heat
and cold ) and electrical modalities, manual medicine techniques, and
therapeutic exercise. Exposure to physiatric procedures will include
electrodiagnostic testing for nerve and muscle disorders, intra-articular
and soft tissue injections, fluoroscopically guided injections, and
acupuncture.
Close cooperation with other hospital departments including
orthopedics, neurosurgery, and radiology broaden the learning experience.
The student will participate in the didactic program of the
department.
