Description

Doctors at Sinai Hospitals Louis and Henrietta Blaustein Womens Health Centers new Labor and Delivery Unit have delivered their first baby, just hours after officially opening its doors. The center was ready for expectant moms the morning of March 2 and nearly 17 hours later, Ashley Terry of Baltimore gave birth to a baby boy.

We have been waiting for this moment for some time and we are thrilled to be able to offer this clinically superior unit to the community, said David B. Schwartz, M.D., chair and chief of Service of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. This ambitious project has resulted in a beautifully designed state-of-the-art facility.

The center features seven private labor/delivery/recovery (LDR) rooms all tastefully decorated for a home like atmosphere. Medical equipment and monitors are creatively concealed behind wall panels when not being used. Comfortable sofas with pullout beds allow family members to spend the night with the new mom. Some of the private bathrooms feature extended-size showers and tubs to accommodate every patient.

Five extended-stay rooms and two high-tech Cesarean section/operating rooms are also available and ready to handle both emergency and scheduled deliveries.

The Maternal/Fetal Medical Institute, where high-risk assessments take place for families that need special pre-natal monitoring, is also located inside the new birthing center. This assessment unit will include four new rooms for ultrasound and new equipment for 3-D and 4-D imaging.

Patients who wish to use a doula, someone who is on hand to give support to expectant mothers and to help during labor and delivery, can also be provided through the center. Some patients may also use a midwife throughout the pregnancy, labor and delivery. Midwives work in conjunction with doctors to ensure no medical issues develop during the delivery process.
