Description

Paul Gurbel, MD, FACC, Director, Sinai Center for Thrombosis Research, Sinai Hospital of Baltimore, is presenting major research developments at the American College of Cardiologys (ACC) Annual Conference. This year, the conference is being held in Orlando Florida from March 6-9.

Gurbel and his team of researchers have made significant discoveries in the area of antiplatelet therapy that is used to prevent complications after coronary artery stenting. One of the major presentations of the conference will be Gurbels results of a study that proves patients who developed complications, both short term and long term, after coronary stenting often do not have sufficient protection from the drugs they are receiving to block platelets. The research also shows that patients with the least platelet blocking effects from the drugs suffer the most complications after coronary stenting.

This new research shows doctors how to prevent a heart attacks from happening after stenting takes place, said Gurbel. Taking out this type of threat can mean the difference between life and death for patients. The team will also present more research into the use of plavix, a commonly administered drug usually given in a fixed dose to decrease complications for patients. In his research, Gurbel shows that the fixed dose approach may not work as well and increasing the dose and this may ultimately prove better for patients in the long run.

The ACC Conference is considered a prestigious international event with presenters from all over the world sharing their ground breaking research with their peers. Gurbel and his team have been a focal point of the conference for many years because of the important research that comes out of the Sinai Center for Thrombosis Research.

It is important for us to share with the world the life changing medicine that we practice here in Baltimore, said Gurbel. Our Center places Sinai Hospital and Baltimore itself on the map internationally when it comes to the research we perform here.
