Genitourinary / Prostate Tumor Clinic

The Genitourinary Clinic works with patients to better understand the causes, progression, and physical and psychological effects of cancers that affect the bladder, kidney, prostate and urinary tract. In addition to treatment, the clinic applies basic research approaches to improve the detection, prevention and treatment of cancer.

The Prostate Tumor Clinic, part of the Alvin & Lois Lapidus Cancer Institute at LifeBridge Health is led by medical oncologists Arif Hussain, M.D., Nancy Vander Velde, M.D., and Mark Brenner, M.D. (radiation oncology).

In recent years, thinking has changed about the treatment of prostate cancer. Previously it was thought that chemotherapy did not have an effect on prostate cancer. But national clinical trials have demonstrated chemotherapy does increase survival rates and the quality of life for patients with advanced disease.

In the Genitourinary Clinic, doctors are looking at patients with earlier stages of cancer to intervene and offer more aggressive treatments, including clinical trials.

In many ways, multidisciplinary care is similar to getting a second opinion�it confirms treatment plans and explores different options. Members of the Genitourinary Clinic team communicate regularly to ensure the best treatment options for patients.
