For Immediate Release

Description

Sinai Hospital of Baltimore has created a new Department of Neurosurgery and has appointed Neal Naff, M.D., to serve as chief of the department. Before this new department was created, Neurosurgery was a division within the Department of Surgery, where Naff served as division head. He has been a member of the medical staff at Sinai Hospital since 1999.

Our neurosurgery medical staff has grown by 75 percent within the last three years, said Neil Meltzer, president, Sinai Hospital of Baltimore. It was time for us to recognize Neurosurgery as an independent department. Neal Naff was the clear choice to act as chief because he has been instrumental in the continued development of our neuro-critical and neuro-oncologic capabilities.

Naff has been credited with bringing the CyberKnife Radiosurgery System to Sinai. This groundbreaking and unique incision-free surgical treatment uses cruise missile technology to accurately locate and target tumors. Naff serves as surgical director for the CyberKnife program. The GliaSite Radiation Therapy System (RTS), an internal radiation therapy that delivers radiation directly at the site of the tumor from within the tumor cavity, is another medical advancement brought to Sinai by Naff.

The elevation of Neurosurgery to an independent department anchors Sinai Hospitals commitment to excellence in clinical neuroscience, said Neal Naff, M.D., chief, Department of Neurosurgery, Sinai Hospital. I am proud to be a part of this new configuration.

Naff completed his medical school training and residency at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and has since won several grants and awards for his work and resident teaching. Currently, he has faculty appointments at both the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and the Uniformed Services University School of Health Services. He has also authored more than 40 peer-reviewed articles, book chapters and abstracts.
