Sister Marie Seton Walsh, R.N., S.S.N.D., community nurse educator for Northwest Hospital Center in Randallstown, was honored recently as a nurse health care hero. The award was presented by the Daily Record to recognize individuals who have significantly affected the quality of health in Maryland and who embody the spirit of heroism.
Sister Seton has played a key role in the development and growth of Northwest Hospital Centers community health program since she joined Northwest 24 years ago. She has been instrumental in designing, developing, establishing, coordinating and teaching community health outreach programs first for Northwest and now for LifeBridge Health, the regional health system of which Northwest is a member.
During an average month, Sister Setons community health programs touch the lives of more than 1,000 people. Her classes include first aid and emergency procedures, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), diabetes education, babysitting programs, medical terminology, and an orientation for first-grade students in Baltimore County schools. Sister Seton also coordinates a variety of health screenings on behalf of LifeBridge Health and physicians in varying disciplines at system hospitals and off campus. In addition, she spends time at senior centers, assisted living centers and senior apartment complexes around the community, delivering monthly lectures on assorted topics of relevance to each audience.
Sister Seton displays a level of enthusiasm day in and day out, hour after hour, which is contagious, notes Robert Fischer, president of Northwest Hospital Center. Her eagerness spreads to everyone she comes in contact with, and her expertise provides her a great deal of credibility with the people in the community we serve.
A former fifth-grade teacher, Sister Seton also works with Villa Julie College nursing students, whom she coaches on caring for patients, taking vital signs and performing screenings. In addition, she is a first aid instructor with the National Safety Council and a volunteer with the American Cancer Society.
Northwest Hospital Center is a member of LifeBridge Health, a regional health organization, which includes Sinai Hospital, Levindale Hebrew Geriatric Center and Hospital, Jewish Convalescent & Nursing Home, and related subsidiaries and affiliates.
