Northwest Hospital Center in Randallstown will hold a nursing camp this summer for high school seniors planning to pursue careers in nursing.
The nursing camp will give students an opportunity to gain a behind-the-scenes� look at medical practice during a typical day. The camp is designed to introduce the students to the challenges and responsibilities of patient care in clinical settings and to witness the use of recently developed medical techniques and technology.
The nursing camp will take place July 7-11, 2003, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily.
Students will have an opportunity to be exposed to as many hospital nursing activities as possible. On the day selected to learn about the emergency room and emergency medicine, an ambulance and emergency medical technician from a local fire department will discuss and demonstrate a 911 response using a camper as a patient. The ER staff will then provide a mock patient experience using campers as patient and family members. Surgery day will allow students to participate in pre-operation activities including blood testing and scrub in. They may also have the opportunity to observe surgery, handle surgical tools during a demonstration and later talk with surgery nurses and nurse anesthetists about the surgical process.
The nursing camp has been developed to provide insight for students at a time when they are beginning to make career choices,� says Sandra Porterfield, director of Volunteer Services at Northwest Hospital Center and director of the nursing camp. Students will dress in green scrubs,
gain hands-on experience and meet with nurses who are working at the hospital. This will help them evaluate whether they would like to pursue nursing as a career.�
