Accreditation

This Fellowship Program is sponsored by Sinai Hospital of Baltimore and has been in existence since 1989. It is based at the ICLL, an affiliated program of the RIAO orthopaedic residency program. The parent resident training program is certified by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). However, the Limb Reconstruction Fellowship Program is not specifically accredited by ACGME because, currently, no guidelines have been published by the ACGME for this type of fellowship program. This is because of the relatively new nature of the techniques and methodologies involved. However, we have modeled the guidelines for the Fellowship Program after existing guidelines for similar orthopaedic subspecialty programs. Therefore, internal certification and oversight is provided by our parent program.

Application and Tenure

The Limb Reconstruction Fellowship Program is offered in periods of 6 and 12 months. We offer two categories of fellowship. The first is our paid clinical fellowship, and the second is our unpaid fellowship. This competitive fellowship is offered to graduates of ACGME-accredited orthopaedic surgical residency programs in the US and Canada. For surgeons who trained in orthopaedic surgery outside the US and Canada, equivalent training and experience will be considered for acceptance on a case-by-case basis. All foreign trainees must have successfully passed the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) (formerly the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates [ECFMG]) and be eligible for a Maryland Medical Training License to apply for a clinical fellowship (paid position). Such applicants must obtain their visas through the ECFMG, and the Center will assist in this process. For international fellows participating in research without patient contact (unpaid position), the Center will provide assistance in obtaining J-1 visas. Attachment 1 lists the various application requirements for each type of fellowship.

Each applicant to the Fellowship Program must submit a current curriculum vitae, photograph, and at least three letters of reference. These are reviewed by the Program Directors, and an interview is required. The applicant's viability is evaluated and, if accepted, an offer letter is sent to the applicant. Once the applicant formally accepts the fellowship, medical credentialing documents and applications for medical privileges are forwarded from the RIAO. Each applicant must pass the current medical credentialing standards set forth by the ICLL and must obtain medical training privileges at RIAO. Certain applicants who are eligible for a full Maryland Medical License and are Board-eligible may receive credentials as junior faculty with staff privileges. After acceptance to the fellowship position, a contract, which must be signed and returned, is sent to the applicant.
