Patients undergoing radiation therapy as part of cancer treatment can usually expect treatments five times a week for up to eight weeks. Stopping in for appointments can take a major portion of the day, especially if there is a long commute.

Mark Brenner, M.D., chief of Radiation Oncology at Sinai and Center director, said the new facility at Owings Mills would not replace existing outpatient radiation services provided through the Alvin & Lois Lapidus Cancer Institute at Sinai.

“Instead of the patients coming to the institution, the institution is coming to the patients,” Brenner said. Future plans include the addition of four chairs for infusion (chemo) therapy.

Radiation Oncology services include conventional external beam radiation treatments and recent technological advances, such as 3-D conformal treatment imaging and intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT). During the painless therapy, high-energy X-ray beams are aimed at the affected part of the body, Brenner explained.

Typical sessions last only a few minutes and, at the Owings Mills center, patients can be in and out without a major disruption of their lives, he said.
Brenner said the atmosphere will be relaxed, supportive and upbeat, but the care and technology state-of-the-art. Ample parking and van transportation between LifeBridge Health campuses are available.
