Studies say that psychiatric problems can affect men and women at any stage in their lives. In fact, one in six will suffer some form of mental illness during his or her lifetime.

To meet the mental health needs of northwest Baltimore County and the surrounding areas, Northwest Hospital Center offers a 12-bed inpatient unit and intensive outpatient program. Complemented by psychiatric consultation services, Northwest Hospital provides comprehensive inpatient, ambulatory and emergency psychiatric care in a comfortable and attractive setting.

Inpatient Unit
The Inpatient Unit treats adults over the age of 18 who can no longer live or function safely at home or in their usual routine. Psychiatric illnesses can be serious—just as serious as heart disease or cancer—and therefore should not be ignored. Effective treatment allows individuals to return to healthy, happy lives.

The Inpatient Unit provides 24-hour skilled psychiatric nursing care and interventions; daily assessment and treatment oversight by a psychiatrist; and a coordinated, goal-driven plan of care delivered by a multidisciplinary team of mental health professionals. Rapid stabilization of acute psychiatric symptoms is the goal.

Intensive Outpatient Programs

For those not needing round-the-clock hospital care, intensive outpatient programs are available. These programs offer the intensity of acute inpatient care without an overnight stay. Group-based therapy focuses on helping each patient work toward specific goals, with an emphasis on developing techniques to enhance coping skills, stress management and problem-solving abilities.

Components of Care

Both inpatient and outpatient programs offer an integrated plan of care based on initial and ongoing assessment by the treatment team, which includes psychiatrists, nurses, social workers, and occupational or expressive therapists. Additional consultations from specialists such as dietitian are available as needed. The multidisciplinary treatment team combines various fields of expertise to provide the most positive therapeutic experience possible for each patient.

Multiple treatment plans are used, including individual therapy, group therapy, education groups, family therapy and physician oversight.

Psychiatric Consultation Services

Psychiatric consultation, including treatment recommendations, is available both to patients who are admitted through Northwest Hospital Center's Emergency Room and to patients who are hospitalized on medical/surgical units. Consultations are provided by a master’s level psychiatric nurse and social work clinicians with psychiatrist back-up.

At Northwest Hospital Center, patients are treated with dignity, understanding and respect.
