First year pediatric residents are on call approximately every fourth night (excluding ER months where they are on shift duty). In accordance with the ACGME 80 hour resident work week, residents leave the Hospital after a 24 hour period of call.
For second and third year residents, call is approximately every sixth or seventh night while on elective and outpatient rotation. A night float system is utilized on the inpatient unit, allowing maximum continuity of care on this busy floor. When rotating on the intensive care unit, call is on an average every fourth night, with leave to go home at 24 hours.
In addition, for second and third year residents, one month each year is entirely call-free and one month a year is protected as "jeopardy" resident on call.
Every resident receives three weeks vacation each year, as well as an additional full week off at either Christmas or New Years.
